Legally Blonde

Legally Blonde, without question, looked like one of the stupidest movies ever conceived after I had seen the trailer. I was utterly disgusted. I wondered how they could possibly get approved any sort of substantial budget for such an awful looking movie. I was prepared for one of the worst movies ever. Luckily it wasn't. Instead it's just a bad one. It's a film that's unfunny, boring, and dimwitted. It borrows way too much from previous "valley-girl" films like the charming Clueless, but doesn't have close to the same effect.

The only thing that Legally Blonde has going for it is its star, Reese Witherspoon. She's good in virtually every role she tackles. As the bimbo blonde girl of this film, she does everything she can with a carelessly written role. She's spunky and has quite a bit of charisma as the sorority standout, but the film can't seem to get enough interesting things for her to do. She ends up retreading familiar territory throughout the entire film. That said, however, I don't think she reaches the standout, pouty performance of Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, from which all modern "blonde bimbo" performances can be measured.

The story follows our girl Elle as she attempts to get back together with her boyfriend. He's going to Harvard Law School and claims that to be president he has to marry a brunette, not a blonde. Determined to get him back, she then applies to the same school, hoping to reunite with him once they're there. Of course, once at the Ivy League campus, new complications are discovered which impede Elle's quest to regain the man she loves. Blah blah blah.

It's not just a relatively boring film, it's also one that got to be tiresome on the eyes. There's only so long you can stare at bright pinks and flourescent yellows. Our set and costume designer took the "blonde sorority bimbo" stereotype to the limits when producing for the film, and never gives her anything remotely tasteful to wear or live in.

In addition, the courtroom scene that is supposedly the film's finale is downright laughable. It's at this point that this film seems to dig its own grave even deeper. It is probably one of the worst courtroom dramatic scenes I've ever seen and the sudden way in which it concludes is stunningly bad.

If not for the lead actor, Legally Blonde would have been agony. With Witherspoon as the lead, however, the film just remained bad. I jumped the gun on my opinion of the trailer, but I didn't overestimate it's poor quality that much. Just a little.
