IN RETROSPECT

This column is devoted to bringing out a second opinion that is completely separate from the anticipation of the event movies. With movies being so dependent on marketing and opening weekend grosses, getting caught up in the hype of the moment is a problem that few casual moviegoers (like me) can escape. These mini-reviews are written several weeks and possibly several viewings later, allowing for perhaps a more accurate protrayal of the true quality of the film. Of course, those inital reviews are not to be ignored; it is very possible that one would have a similar initial opinion of a film. One might perceive this column as a way of covering up for my initial over-excitedness, but it is equally possible that my opinion of a film might rise in appreciation over time.

This column started in the summer of 2002 and will (except for a few specific exceptions) only cover movies during and after that time period.
